Relations between Turkey and Estonia, 25.11.2022

Türkiye’s relations with Estonia are based on the “Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation” signed on 1 December 1924. The occupation of Estonia by the Soviet Union during the Second World War was never recognized by Türkiye. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, diplomatic relations between the two countries were re-established on 23 October 1991.

Bilateral relations between Türkiye and Estonia have a positive course and are developing steadily. H.E. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s visit to Estonia on 23-24 October 2014 was a concrete sign of the collaboration between Türkiye and Estonia.

Estonia’s NATO and EU memberships have brought the two countries much closer in terms of common objectives and mutual cooperation.

While Türkiye supported Estonia’s NATO membership, Türkiye’s EU membership process is supported by Estonia.

In 2021, total trade volume between the two countries was 356million USD (exports 126 million; imports 230 million).

The main items of Türkiye’s exports to Estonia are textile products, automotive, machines and devices, while the main items of its imports from Estonia are steel and iron, electrical machines and devices.

Türkiye is one of the most preferred destination for Estonian tourists. More than 77 thousand tourists from Estonia have visited Türkiye in 2021.

Turkish Language Department in Tallin University has been providing Turkish language classes as well as Turkish history and culture since 1997. Turkish Ministry of Education supports the department by assigning a lecturer from Türkiye.

A monument was opened in Rakvere on 14th November 2008 in the memory of the Ottoman soldiers who were held captive during 1877-1878 Ottoman-Russia War, brought to Estonia and died there.

Nearly 1050 Turkish citizens are resident in Estonia.
